Information For Students

We deliver a 40 hour archives practicum to students enrolled in archival or library science studies. The practicum for runs three hours per week over four months. It is combination of webinars, assigned readings, in-house instruction, and hands-on practice in the areas of preservation, arrangement, description, digitization, and digital preservation. Students may have the opportunity to conduct research in support of reference inquiries, or to assist with an exhibit. To apply for the practicum, send your resume and a cover letter to the Congregational Archivist who will arrange an interview time with you.

Students who complete the archives practicum have an advantage in that they are able to add real work experience in an archive to their resume. They also receive ongoing mentorship and references from the Congregational Archivist upon completion of the practicum.

In addition to the archives practicum program, we also invite students to take part in our 40 hour medical artifacts cataloguing project, which we deliver in conjunction with St. Joseph’s Hospital. This project is to preserve the St. Joseph’s Hospital and School of Nursing Artifact Collection. Students receive training in basic museum registration methods, including labelling, cataloguing, photographing, and researching artifacts. The medical artifacts cataloguing project is 40 hours in duration, one-half day per week, over a period of four months. To apply, send your resume and a cover letter to the Congregational Archivist who will arrange an interview time with you.

Sir Allan MacNab and his family were benefactors of the Sisters who had free access to their beautiful grounds at Dundurn Castle for an outing or picnic. After the death of Sir Allan, Dundurn Castle was offered to the Sisters for $15,000 but their coffers were empty. In 1867, Mrs. Sophia MacNab, sister in law of Sr. Allan MacNab presented the bell of her late residence, Dundurn Castle to the Sisters of St. Joseph, and it hung in their chapel tower ever since. When the Sisters moved to their new Motherhouse in Dundas in 1951, they moved the bell to their new chapel. Mrs. Sophia MacNab died in Toronto but her remains were conveyed to Hamilton. Her funeral was held from the Sisters’ chapel on Park Street, and her remains were interred in the family plot on Dundurn grounds. This bell was tolled for her funeral. The Junior Sisters looked after the ringing of the bell by a long rope which hung from the tower. From 1867 to 1967, the Sisters rang the Angelus in honor of the Incarnation at 6:00 a.m., 12:00 noon, and 6:00 p.m. The Sisters donated the bell to the Hamilton Centennial Committee to restore it in Dundurn Castle, and the Committee replaced the original bell with a different one.

Annals, annals, and annals!

Rhiannon Allen-Roberts · April 1, 2025 ·

Thanks in part to Library and Archives Canada’s Documentary Heritage Communities Program, the archives has been able to preserve, arrange, and describe the majority of the annals from the Congregations of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Pembroke, Hamilton, and London!

These annals are written logs documenting the day-to-day activities of the Sisters while fulfilling various ministries across Canada and abroad. Many of the annals also include photographs, news clippings, and ephemera from the missions.

The finding aid for the Pembroke annals is available on Archeion, Ontario’s Archival Information Network. Keep an eye on our Archeion page as we work to upload the finding aids for the annals of London and Hamilton.

Statement on Racism and Discrimination

The Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Canada acknowledges the harm done by systemic racism and discrimination, and strives to ensure our archives is a welcoming, inclusive environment for archive patrons. We will work to help increase the representation of Indigenous, Black, and people of color within the library, archive, and museum profession through our training programs. We will review our finding aids and metadata to ensure that respectful language is used, including the preferred names used by Indigenous peoples.

We support the Society of American Archivists Statement on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion SAA Statement on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
